What is a Walima?
A walima is a traditional Islamic wedding feast, typically hosted by the groom's family to celebrate the marriage. It is a joyous occasion filled with food, prayers, and socializing, symbolizing gratitude and blessings for the couple's new life together. While customs may vary across cultures, guests can expect a warm, welcoming atmosphere with delicious cuisine, speeches, and sometimes music or entertainment. Modest attire is usually appreciated, and while some gatherings may have gender-segregated seating, others may be mixed. If attending a walima, embracing the spirit of hospitality and celebration is the best way to enjoy the experience!
What to expect from our walima:
- Black Attire
- Mixed Seating (Unless Specified in RSVP)
- Modest or Classy/Business Casual Attire
- You do NOT need to wear a head covering UNLESS you are going to pray with us. We will provide some extra hijabs and Kufi's in case you forget yours.
- No Alcohol or Drugs
- Photo Booth
- Wedding Games
- Great Food
If you are interested in continuing the fun after the Walima is over, there will be a concert at the waterfront with Jagged Edge, 702, Stokely, and more until 11 PM. Please feel free to grab your tickets early (they are fairly affordable right now). See the schedule section for more information.
What Should (Could) I Wear?
Modesty is not just for the feminine folx, it is for all that attend. Since we will be at The Muslim Community Center of Louisville, it is important for us to respect the traditions and expectations of the space. Check out some shops below and looks that are considered modest attire for Islamic events and spaces.
